Solar-Power Sleeping Fairy
SLEEPING SOLAR FAIRY
Price: $35.99
Customer Review: peaceful
I have two of these. One I put on my son’s grave and one in my garden. That way I can feel a little closer to him. I love this sleeping fairy. Everything from when I ordered it, till I received it was effortless.
Customer Review: Beautiful and intricate solar statue
This is a very detailed statue with lots of subtle accents and touches that really show you’re getting value for money. The solar light itself is very bright, more so than the amazon picture suggests, and stays bright for hours. If I had one criticism it’s that the solar panel is ugly and obtrusive (it’s a fairly large black square on the back of the fairy). Whilst it’s not seen from the front at all, the light obviously needs sunlight to recharge and so must be visible. You can’t tuck her into a corner to hide it. I really can’t fault the makers for this - it’s normal to see a solar panel and it’s nice not to see it all from the front, but I wish it was separate and could be concealed away from the statue. Minor gripe really - other than that this item is very pretty.

Garden Angel with Bird Verdigris
Garden Angel w/Bird-Verdigris - Verdigris-finish angel with feathered brethren. 6 1/4 x 5 x 9 high.
Customer Review: Angel Statue
I was somewhat disappointed in that the picture shows the angel sitting on a stone or ledge. However, this stone or ledge is not included with the statue so I will have to find some place to sit her where she can be balanced and not keep falling over. It probably mentioned this in the description but I did not notice it. I went solely by the picture. Otherwise the statue is very cute.

Aladdin

Aladdin
Disney’s 1992 animated feature is a triumph of wit and skill. The high-tech artwork and graphics look great, the characters are strong, the familiar story is nicely augmented with an interesting villain (Jafar, voiced by Jonathan Freeman), and there’s an incredible hook atop the whole thing: Robin Williams’s frantically hilarious vocal performance as Aladdin’s genie. Even if one isn’t particularly moved by the love story between the title character (Scott Weinger) and his girlfriend Jasmine (Linda Larkin), you can easily get lost in Williams’s improvisational energy and the equally entertaining performances of Freeman and Gilbert Gottfried (as Jafar’s parrot). –Tom Keogh

Customer Review: Carmen’s movie
My 2 year old granddaughter loves this movie. She sings along to most of the movie. She is saying all the words too.

Customer Review: One of the good ones.
Aladdin is definately one of the best Disney movies. However, all of these added “special features” that drive up the cost of the DVD and dub it “platinum” are completely unnecessary. Disney has a bad habbit of adding useless garbage to their DVDs. Unfortunately, Aladdin is not available on DVD without all of the nonsense.

I would still recommend this movie to anyone young or old for a good laugh and to see Disney’s usual ability to transform an old tale into a “magical” story for all to enjoy.

Leo Smit: 33 Songs on Poems of Emily Dickinson
Leo Smit has an impressive pedigree as an American composer and musician. A virtuoso pianist, he has worked closely with such legends as Stravinsky, Balanchine, Copland and Stokowski. He has set more that 75 of Emily Dickinson’s poems to music, grouping the works into cycles about related subject matter. The disc contains the world premiere recordings of three of those cycles- Childe Emilie- Memories and Fantasies of Childhood, The Celestrial Thrush- Songs of Music and Bird, and The White Diadem- Songs About Poets and Poetry. Smit’s songs display great sensitivity to Dickinson’s very personal world, and reflect the poet’s emotional range by adopting an extremely colorful palette. The songs frequently veer from the simple and tonal to more rhythmically complex and chromatic settings, always alert to word and mood.

This well priced, superbly performing product works well with Nikon digital cameras (not all SD memory devices will). Highly recommended and the mini high speed reader is a welcome gift.

Customer Review: For quick shots, this is the card to get
If your not familiar with the differences in camera cards these days, i don’t blame you. There are so many of them, sometimes you have to consider the card before you consider the camera. In my case I already had the camera and was looking for something that could handle quick succesive shots. I already had an sd card and an sdhc card, but i found them both rather slow at taking succesive shots. I had one of the best digital cameras around, so I knew it wasnt the camera. After reading up I found out that there were different read write speeds. For example the ones you usually find on sale are typically the lowest read write speeds, even if they are four gigs. Even the blue sdhc cards only write at times 5 or 6. This card however blows them away with profesional read write speeds of 15 to 20 megabytes per second. I didn’t think it would be all that big a deal at first, but when I got this thing into my camera, it really made the difference. If you have kids, pets, or need to take pictures of fast moving objects, this is the one thats going to give you the performance you need. I highly reccomend this little beast.

Arleen Aug?r - American Soprano

Used Price: $12.18
Customer Review: Pure Perfection
Words cannot express how much I adore these two discs, but here goes anyway. A friend gave me a burned copy ‘Love Songs’ which I lost and so I purchased this double disc set. Arleen is by far and away my favorite soprano of all time and if you end up owning these cd’s, I have no doubt she will become yours as well. Arleen had the most gorgeous voice, a pure yet colorful tone. And her technique as demonstrated on these recordings was superb. If you are a singer as am I, you will not be able to ignore her phrasing on The Salley Gardens - it’s truy astonishing. If you are in to doing side by side comparison, try listening to Arleen’s version of O Del Mio Amato Ben, then listen to Sumi Jo’s version. But be forewarned if you’re a Sumi Jo fan, you won’t be able to listen to her version ever again. Arleen wrings every bit of naked emotion out of that song without ever being cheesy or over the top. Her musical instinct and interpretation was as flawless as her voice and technique. I use these cd’s as my personal master classes with an impeccable artist who was taken from us all much too soon.
Customer Review: Had a Freudian moment
Be it known, I had no intention of writing a review of this recording. I still do not in fact. But I listened to the late Ms. Auger’s reading of ‘Lascia chio pianga’ and nearly seized (cigarette in hand and all.) I’ve yet to move beyond track five. That being documented, I implore both the fastidious collector of vocal music and the layman alike to purchase this set. Oh, and about the Freud…following the aforementioned revelatory aural sensation of some five minutes, I typed amazing.com in place of the amazon.com destination. “Behind every mishap in speech, writing, etc. there lies an unconcious motive…” Well,

The Bucket List

The Bucket List
“You measure yourself by the people who measure themselves by you,” says the quietly wise Carter Chambers, played with gravitas and grace by a Morgan Freeman. In Rob Reiner’s moving, often hilarious film The Bucket List, all sorts of people measure themselves against the two heroes, Chambers and his hospital suitemate, Edward Cole (Jack Nicholson). But as Cole finds, having spent his entire life building a Fortune 500 company, none of that much matters when cancer, the great equalizer, pays a visit. The film traces the adventures of the two unlikely friends, who meet in a hospital cancer ward, each given six months to live. The “bucket list” of the title refers to a lifelong list of goals that a teacher of Chambers once advised him to compile–and achieve–”before you kick the bucket.” Soon the two are off on what may be the last grand adventure of their life, vowing to tick off as many goals (skydiving, race-car driving, seeing the wonders of the world) as they can in the time they have left. What starts as a medical melodrama becomes a road trip, yet the men’s mortality realities are never far from thought. The two leads give impressive performances, and remind the viewer of just how few American films focus on the lives and loves of senior citizens. Nicholson even manages to lose his persona in his character, much as he did in About Schmidt. There’s a lovely John Mayer tune, “Say (What You Need to Say),” that’s perfectly matched to the film’s clear-eyed view of life: What does one person leave behind as his true legacy? –A.T. Hurley

Customer Review: Jack Nicholson, Morgan Freeman light up the screen in the Bucket List
Jack Nicholson, Morgan Freeman… how good can you get? You get the best male actor ever known and the best African American actor ever put them together in a heart warming, touching movie like this and you have pure gold. I can not say enough good things about the Bucket List. It’s inspiring, moving, and heartbreaking. The best that Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman have to offer. Both make this movie look true to life, effortless acting, and spunk to boot. Putting them together was the best of the best any director, movie studio, or writer could have imagined. Check out the Bucket List… it’ll make you laugh, cry, and feel good in many ways.

Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things

“Reduce, reuse, recycle” urge environmentalists; in other words, do more with less in order to minimize damage. As William McDonough and Michael Braungart argue in their provocative, visionary book, however, this approach perpetuates a one-way, “cradle to grave” manufacturing model that dates to the Industrial Revolution and casts off as much as 90 percent of the materials it uses as waste, much of it toxic. Why not challenge the notion that human industry must inevitably damage the natural world, they ask.In fact, why not take nature itself as our model? A tree produces thousands of blossoms in order to create another tree, yet we do not consider its abundance wasteful but safe, beautiful, and highly effective; hence, “waste equals food” is the first principle the book sets forth. Products might be designed so that, after their useful life, they provide nourishment for something new-either as “biological nutrients” that safely re-enter the environment or as “technical nutrients” that circulate within closed-loop industrial cycles, without being “downcycled” into low-grade uses (as most “recyclables” now are). Elaborating their principles from experience (re)designing everything from carpeting to corporate campuses, the authors make an exciting and viable case for change.

Customer Review: Seeing ourselves as all being part of the great cradle to cradle cycle is an important step forward.
For those to are ecologically minded, a key part of creating any new product is to produce a life cycle assessment (LCA), which is also known as a cradle-to-grave analysis, working from manufacture (`cradle’) to use and disposal (`grave’). The LCA investigates all of the environmental impacts of that product and attempts to minimise that damage. One of the key premises of McDonough & Brangart’s book, is that minimising damage just isn’t good enough. Instead, the authors propose that we change our entire design processes so that reuse and nourishment are built right into the process. Instead of minimising waste, we create value. Cradle to Cradle goes beyond the notion of having recycling as the final step in a process flow, and instead builds on the idea that waste need not exist at all. We can design our lives and products around the notion of nourishment - from the way we live to (primarily) how we design and produce goods. The natural world provides the template for what the authors suggest, from the regenerative world of the insect, to the cherry tree, to the use of natural nutrients such as solar and wind power. They suggest that the key to working within, rather than against, nature is to respect biodiversity, respect the elegance and abundance of what is around us, and begin our design process with the notion of there is no such thing as waste. The writing style itself is clear, simple, and suitable for all ages and knowledge levels. Different readers will take different things from the book. It is addressed to those that do design for a living, and for those who are professionals in industry, this book will serve as a manual for development. But all of us are engaged in creation and consumption in one way or another (the machine I’m using to type this on, or the reams of paper my kids draw on to take two general examples) and the choices we make on how we will conduct those activities, and seeing ourselves as all being part of the great cradle to cradle cycle is an important step forward. The book spends some time discussing the whole notion of dangerous design principles, including the way in which “downcycling” only defers the problem as products become more and more unstable (and environmental problematic) as they are recycled. Although I’ve yet to see plastic books become a trend, the book itself is an example of how a product can be manufactured in a way that will be infinitely valuable. It’s made out of synthetic paper which doesn’t use wood pulp or any dangerous inks or substances, and is both waterproof and pleasurable to read, with nice thick pages and clear ink. The book goes into quite a lot of detail about what it would mean to design products that weren’t less bad, but rather 100% good. The authors look at architecture and how we can design buildings that take into account the diversity of their settings, and the natural needs of their inhabitants. The book concludes with “Five Steps to Eco-Effectiveness”, a neat summary of how to put the philosophical principles discussed in the book into practice. Some of these, such as “Step 2: Follow informed personal preferences” may seem a little unusual, advocating that we use our aesthetic sense, our observations and our own sense of pleasure (yes, pleasure) to guide our design decisions. While others, such as “Step 4: Reinvent” may seem almost too broad for the average reader. However, the book is full of so many specific examples, primarily from industry, that it’s easy to picture what they are advocating working in practice. After all, the book itself is not only beautifully and safely designed to fit the “cradle-to-cradle” philosophy, it is also written in a way that is easily read, linguistically elegant and appealing, and sound in its advice. As a writer, I can see the sense in taking on this wholistic approach to environmentalism, ditching the hysteria and the mass of finger-pointing practices which look green but which don’t actually make much of a difference, and taking on this approach in a whole body sense. It’s powerful stuff and the impact is starting to happen, perhaps a little too slowly, but, as the authors say, “it’s going to take forever…that’s the point.” Magdalena Ball is the author of Sleep Before Evening.
Customer Review: PERFECT!
This book was in perfect condition when I received it and the really cool thing about it is that its WATERPROOF which means you can read it pretty much anywhere-in the shower, underwater, at the beach or even in a fish tank! The book gives you scary insight on how we are destroying our earth and killing ourselves slowly and simultaneously!!!

That song alone is worth the whole album. I grew up listening to Neil Diamond and I am proud of this song, if nothing else.

Customer Review: FSRS
I LOVED this book -I have read it twice. I lose myself in it and wish the American way of life had more of this Joie de Vivre.
Customer Review: Total waste of time
I can’t believe only one other person gave this a poor rating. Maybe the others didn’t even bother. I picked up this book at the library, thankfully, so I can return it. This book provides nothing more than a look at the insipid life of a man with a hyphenated identity, but claims to be only French. Most of the images in this book are of his home, friends and kids. It’s like a family newsletter made thick and glossy. I honestly don’t care to know so much about him. Sure, it’s charming to have a home in the French countryside. If you want to read some escapist travelogue, which can be fun, there are lots of those around. If you’re looking for a cookbook, find one of those. And if you’re looking to improve your life, then head to self-help. This book is none of these. It’s just plain dumb.

Brain Rules: 12 Principles for Surviving and Thriving at Work, Home, and School (Book & DVD)

Brain Rules: 12 Principles for Surviving and Thriving at Work, Home, and School (Book & DVD)
Most of us have no idea what’s really going on inside our heads. Yet brain scientists have uncovered details every business leader, parent, and teacher should know–such as the brain’s need for physical activity to work at its best.

How do we learn? What exactly do sleep and stress do to our brains? Why is multi-tasking a myth? Why is it so easy to forget–and so important to repeat new information? Is it true that men and women have different brains?

In Brain Rules, molecular biologist Dr. John Medina shares his lifelong interest in how the brain sciences might influence the way we teach our children and the way we work. In each chapter, he describes a brain rule–what scientists know for sure about how our brains work–and then offers transformative ideas for our daily lives.

Medina’s fascinating stories and sense of humor breathe life into brain science. You’ll learn why Michael Jordan was no good at baseball. You’ll peer over a surgeon’s shoulder as he finds, to his surprise, that we have a Jennifer Aniston neuron. You’ll meet a boy who has an amazing memory for music but can’t tie his own shoes.

You will discover how:

- Every brain is wired differently
- Exercise improves cognition
- We are designed to never stop learning and exploring
- Memories are volatile
- Sleep is powerfully linked with the ability to learn
- Vision trumps all of the other senses
- Stress changes the way we learn

In the end, you’ll understand how your brain really works–and how to get the most out of it.

About the DVD The Brain Rules DVD, included with this book, is a lively tour of the 12 brain rules. You will experience firsthand Medina’s rare gift for making science fun, accessible, and relevant. The DVD will take your understanding of the book to the next level.

Customer Review: Amazing
Read this book. Entertaining, clear and you will learn a lot about how we work.

Customer Review: Fascinating book
I’m a teacher and have recently become interested in the brain. This book is GREAT for educators. It will make you rethink the way you teach. It made me realize how important some parts of the curriculum are (P.E.) which are often cut in order to make more room for review time. With all the non-sense high stakes tests of NCLB it’s not surprising (I did it myself) but if you want to boost your test scores, DON’T CUT P.E. I love this book and would recommend it to anybody, but especially teachers.

Planters Dry-Roasted Pistachios, 16-Ounce Bags (Pack of 4)
Customer Review: Tasty!
These were the best, and somehow fresher-tasting, that we have enjoyed, yet! A good buy!
Customer Review: Excellent with just the right amount of salt.
If there is a “con” here, it is that they are addictive and I end up buying two lots (a total of 8 bags) to keep from running out. I haven’t tried the “subscription” feature, but just may do that next time I have to order. They are lightly salted with a very fine salt “flour” (rather than the salt “grains” that one gets on some nuts) which is just about right. As usual there are a half dozen unopened nuts, but I have yet to find a bad nut. Quality control must be pretty good. I’ve lived in the Middle East and have eaten many pistachios. These are somewhere in the middle, but I think they are the best bargain on Amazon, at $5 per pound.

Sugar and Slaves: The Rise of the Planter Class in the English West Indies, 1624-1713 (Published for the Institute of Early AME)
First published by UNC Press in 1972, Sugar and Slaves presents a vivid portrait of English life in the Caribbean more than three centuries ago. Using a host of contemporary primary sources, Richard Dunn traces the development of plantation slave society in the region. He examines sugar production techniques, the vicious character of the slave trade, the problems of adapting English ways to the tropics, and the appalling mortality rates for both blacks and whites that made these colonies the richest, but in human terms the least successful, in English America.

Customer Review: Excellent Research
Dunn does an excellent job of explaining the planter class in the West Indies. His research is excellent and his writing style is clear and devoid of that crazy academic jargon so often found in history books. This is my first book on planters and it gave me a good fund of knowledge on the histories of Barbados, the Leeward Islands, and Jamaica, and it outlined in detail how the planters made or lost money. For me, it’s Dunn’s careful unraveling of the planters’ financial arrangements and entanglements that made this book absolutely hard to put down!
Customer Review: the brutality of the West Indies slave trade
In “Sugar and Slaves,” Richard Dunn shows not only the brutality of the West Indies slave trade that revolved around sugar, but also how slave owners “created a society…radically different from the one they left at home.” He notes that while these planters brought with them to the islands their laws, church and social institutions, these settlers early on “developed their own lifestyle…bent by their eager embrace of African slavery.” (46) Dunn persuasively argues that European planters who came to the West Indies traveled literally and figuratively “beyond the line” of normal, British social conventions, and created a world in which “everything goes,” particularly the exploitation of slaves and natives in the creation of a dominant master class. These rapacious men, he argues, quickly adapted to harsh climatic conditions by abandoning the use of lower class but white indentured servants in favor of exploitable, controllable Negroes once the sugar boom created a demand. “The rape’s progress was fatally easy,” Dunn notes: “from exploiting the English poor to abusing colonial bondservants to ensnaring kidnaps and convicts to enslaving black Africans.” (73) Unlike his Chesapeake or Lowcountry counterpart, the West Indies sugar lord produced nothing but his staple crop, and relied instead on imports for all other necessities. “In short, the English sugar planter was more strictly a businessman than the senhor de engenho of Brazil.” (65) This was a marked difference from other English settlement and colonization patterns, which Dunn concludes is evidence of the atypical class of planter the Caribbean islands fashioned.

Customer Review: Very Good
These dvds are excellent. My 4 year old daughter now knows all the alphabet sounds and is already starting to put words together (bat, cat, etc)

I would recommend these dvds to any parent that would like their child to learn in an entertaining way.

Customer Review: Leapfrog Forgot the Long Vowel Sounds!
As an elementary school educator and a mother of two under the age of three, I am a huge advocate of anything that helps children with learning. My son received a magnetic letter learner made by LeapFrog that he just LOVES and is truly enabling him to learn all of his letters and sounds. I especially liked the fact that all of the vowels had both the short and long vowel sounds. When a friend told me about these videos, I did not hesitate to order them.

I was quite disappointed when the only vowel sounds given on the Talking Letter Factory and Talking Words Factory DVDs were the short vowels. LeapFrog loses one star from me for that.

I still give this DVD set 4 stars for its high ability to keep a 27 month old’s attention while helping him to learn at the same time. It even teaches children about capital letters versus lower case letters. Way to go Leapfrog! Just hoping that Leapfrog makes another addition to this adding the neglected long vowel sounds, making it the perfect letter learning DVD.

Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router

Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router
The Linksys Wireless-G broadband router is really three devices in one box. First, it’s a wireless access point, which lets you connect Wireless-G or Wireless-B devices to the network. There’s also a built-in four-port full-duplex 10/100 switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices. Connect four PCs directly, or daisy-chain out to more hubs and switches to create as big a network as you need. Finally, the router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection.

To protect your data and privacy, the Wireless-G broadband router can encrypt all wireless transmissions, and it supports the industrial-strength wireless security of 802.1x authentication and authorization. The router can serve as a DHCP server, has NAT technology to protect against Internet intruders, supports VPN pass-through, and can be configured to filter internal users’ access to the Internet. Configuration is a snap with the Web browser-based configuration utility.

With the Linksys Wireless-G broadband router at the center of your home or office network, you can share a high-speed Internet connection, files, printers, and multiplayer games with the flexibility, speed, and security you need!

Wireless-G is the 54 Mbps wireless networking standard that’s more than four times faster than the widely deployed Wireless-B (802.11b) products found in homes, businesses, and public wireless hotspots around the country. But since they share the same 2.4 GHz radio band, Wireless-G devices can also interoperate with existing 11 Mbps Wireless-B equipment.

Because both standards are built-in, you can protect your investment in existing 802.11b infrastructure, and migrate to the new screaming-fast Wireless-G standard as your needs grow.

For more information on the differences between an access point and a router with access point, see the following table:

access point vs. router

See a comparison diagram of the different wireless technologies.

Wireless networks are rapidly becoming more popular and coming down in price. Since they don’t require cables, you can use the devices anywhere in an office or home, even out on the patio. There’s no need to roll out an Ethernet network cable to each room of a house; you can network anywhere–without wires. Outside the home, wireless networking is available in hotspots at coffee shops, businesses, and airports–great when you’re on the road and need to get some work done. For convenience, wireless networking is the answer.

Which Wireless Standard Is Right for Me?
Now that you’ve decided to create a wireless network, the next step is to figure out which wireless standard to use.

Basically, a standard is a set of specifications for a device. All devices that follow a specific standard share operating characteristics, such as the radio frequency used and maximum data transfer speed.

For wireless networking, there are three standards to choose from at this time:

  • 802.11b
  • 802.11a
  • 802.11g

Customer Review: Great product…I would highly recommend it…
This router has worked out perfectly for me. The instructions were so clear that I was able to put it together on my own, and the product itself is great. It was much cheaper than similar items from other brands, and the shipping was fast. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking to set up wireless in a home or apartment.

Customer Review: What version?
Can somebody look under their router and tell me what version number Amazon is shipping out please?

Thanks!

Customer Review: P90x is the real deal
After much research and 45 days of working out to the videos (at the end of my sixth week of the 12 week process),I can write that P90x is the real deal. All of the moves are push and pull to the extreme and old fashioned hard work is the only way to get great results. The nutrition guide that comes with the program is excellent and provides for many ways of reducing your fat intake and increasing your lean meat, fish, low calorie high protein foods.

Tony is very good about showing good form and making corrections for you to follow. I love his energy, humor and enthusiasm. Its the best investment I have made in fitness.

Need more proof. I was a 210 lbs man at 28% body fat, after 30 days, I remained a 210 lbs man and body fat was reduced to 21%. The body fat test was administered by the same health trainer both times and at a highly reputable fitness center. That means i dropped fat and gained muscle at the same time for a net even weight loss. Cant wait to see the next 30 days results.

Customer Review: 50 years old and in the best shape of my life
There are so many great reviews of this product already here but I felt compelled to add my own. I have been running and doing yoga for years and was in reasonably good shape (5′11″ 180lbs) when I started P90X but was feeling blue about recently turning 50 and wanted to see if I could get in better shape. You should be aware that to be successfull on P90X, you also need to change your diet. This is very important. There is a diet book that comes with P90X, I did not follow it too closely but took away some key points: more lean protein, no dessert, no junk, reduce alchohol, cut back on carbs(initially , later in the program you need carbs). The most important diet pointers are to eat several small meals throughout the day and to not eat within 2 hours of going to bed. You need to set aside time to do this program, at least 1 hr per day, 6 days a week and 1.5 hrs on the yoga day (once a week , except twice a week for 3 of the weeks).

That being said it works and I actually began to look forward to the workouts(after a few weeks). In 90 days I lost 17 lbs and gained a lot of strength. I went from size 34 pants being tight to size 32 being loose. When I started I could do 5 pullups(I thought that was pretty good at the time), now I can do 12. The workouts are tough, you have to adopt their motto that they start every DVD with “BRING IT”. You need to live that. I wish this program was around 20 years ago, I have spent so much on gyms, yoga DVDs, yoga classes, etc. Nothing I have done has gotten in the kind of shape P90X did. Enjoy!

Customer Review: Great bulb planter
OXO has come up with a better idea for easy planting of bulbs and transplant plugs of ground cover. Even if you have stickey clay soil this bulb planter will release very well. I just wonder how long it will last with allot of use. Grit gets into the release sping so you have to rinse it often. I use a spray of 10W40 lubricant.
