Contech Electronics Scarecrow Motion-Activated Sprinkler #CRO101/CRO102

Contech Electronics Scarecrow Motion-Activated Sprinkler #CRO101/CRO102
Finally a way to keep unwanted animals out of the garden and protect your yard, fruit trees, vegetables and flowers from hungry or destructive creatures. Cats, dogs, deer, rabbits, large birds, and many others. The patented Scarecrow motion-activated sprinkler is the smartest scarecrow ever invented. When it sees an intruder it instantly releases full garden hose water pressure towards the trespasser. The effect is both startling and immediate. Animals quickly get out of the area and avoid it in the future. The ScareCrow motion-activated sprinkler is constructed of durable, high-quality materials, and has been designed to provide many years of reliable service.

Top view of spray radius. Click to enlarge.

Using the ScareCrow is easy. Simply attach a standard garden hose to its base, set the ScareCrow in the ground in the area you want to protect, and then turn on the water. Once you switch the unit on, it is ready to go.

How does it work?
The ScareCrow uses a combination of sudden noise, unexpected movement, and a startling blast of water to create a memorable and unpleasant experience for the trespasser.
The animal immediately associates this unpleasant experience with the location, and to avoid similar surprises, learns to avoid the area. If an animal chooses to return, the ScareCrow will be waiting.
While a human may flee several steps after activating a ScareCrow, animals are typically affected to a much greater degree. In most cases they run much farther, and stay away longer. Because the unit only triggers when the animal moves, its behavior is difficult for animals to anticipate, making it a very effective deterrent.

Customer Review: Works great!!!
We purchased the scarecrow to stop the Blue Heron’s from eating our Koi fish in our pond. We tried an owl, plastic heron (moved to different locations frequently) and nothing worked. UNTILL—we purchased the scarecrow. It has been great and no fish missing. I must say my grand-kids also love it to run through and make it squirt them. Teriffic product.

Customer Review: It worked on me!!!
I use three Sarecrows to protect my garden. One morning I forgot to turn off the water. The blast from one of the “crows’ caused me to drop everything i was carrying and scamper out of the garden. it startled the tar out of me!

Only negative so far is battery life is about 1 month. I am now trying rechargeable batteries.

How to Plan and Build Arbors & Trellises, Breezeways, Fences & Gates, Small Buildings

Making Bentwood Trellises, Arbors, Gates & Fences (Rustic Home Series)
Long has written a friendly, conversational book about bentwood garden accessories, some fantastic, others prosaic or elegantly simple. In nine main chapters, he covers selecting wood, making a basic trellis, more elaborate and decorative trellis designs, bentwood gates, bentwood fences, arbors, and trellises made without bentwood. He discusses the selection of plants for your structures, and finally, adds a chapter on simply enjoying your bentwood structures, even going so far as to include a few yummy recipes for muffins, teas, and shortbread to savor in your newly created garden environment!

The techniques outlined by Long can be easily adapted to your own individual designs and creative ideas. As Bertha Reppert, the founder of the Rosemary House, says, “I shall never look at plant prunings the same way again.” Bentwood garden structures offer a natural, eye-pleasing alternative to plastics and mass-manufactured garden installations, making use of the garden itself to generate construction materials that might otherwise end up burned or in a landfill. –Mark A. Customer Review: Making Bentwood Hearts!
A little disappointing. Great if you want to make most things with heart shapes in it. I didn’t. Good for explaining how you go about putting one together, and a few nice designs. The recipes in the back where odd - a nice idea, and i suppose better than another six pages of a heart shaped patterned trellises. Also a lot of diagrams rather than pictures - Pictures would work better i think - obviously dearer to print though.
Customer Review: Recycle that brush!
This book gives good directions and shows many attractive ideas. I am going to try a living fence and some supports for pole beans in the garden-that should be much prettier than the metal posts and twine I used last year.

Customer Review: I found what I wanted in this book
Trellises, Arbors & Pergolas: Ideas and Plans for Garden Structures (Better Homes & Gardens) I had been searching for a long time to find a suitable design for an arbor at the end of three converging pathways on a rustic portion of our property. I finally found the design I wanted at the bottom of page 9. I showed the design to our carpenter and he built an identical copy out of ipe. The result was so perfect, that I asked him to build a small pavilion in the same style on another part of our property. It also was elegant and sturdy. He commenced these projects in the middle of January in snowy, icy, windy, sub-freezing weather and finished both within about two or three weeks. I am now designing a 200-foot-long fence along two sides of our property in–you guessed it–the same style. If I ever figure out how to work my husband’s new handycam I may be able to submit a video review. Useful book.

Gated Garden Arbor
Add a touch of charm and character to your garden, pond area, yard, or walkway. Climbing plants naturally cling to the outside trellis to create an enchanting passage.
Customer Review: Cute!
My wife and I really have enjoyed this cute arbor. We bought this one last summer. It really complements our bistro set and helps create a cozy little courtyard. And, it is something that all the neighbors don’t have! Anyway, it has held up great since we bought it (unbelievably weather resistant)and we live in the bay area. It was a snap to put together. I recommend this one.

Customer Review: Some Very Nice Ideas
Contains some great ideas and super pictures of finished products, but gives much less information on how to construct the mid to large arbor projects that I was looking to do. It also is more of an intermediate to expert carpenter project book; I suspect most high intermediate and expert builders could easily take any of the ideas here and run with them. I, being somewhat of a novice carpenter, was looking for something a little more “by the numbers” for the arbors I would like to build. However, I am using the step by step trellis plans for one of the simpler trellises and it’s very much “by the numbers”.
    Customer Review: Tablesaw required
The projects in this book are well written with detailed instructions. The only caveat is that they all seem to require a table saw. The author assumes that you will make all the stock by cutting materials down to size on a table saw. It would have been more helpful if somewhere in the book he discussed alternative strategies for those without immediate access to a table saw. Or had a range of projects that did not all have exactly the same set of required tools. Overall a good book, but check your tool list before buying.

    A Letter from Brian Selznick

    Dear readers,

When I was a kid, two of my favorite books were by an amazing man named Remy Charlip. Fortunately and Thirteen fascinated me in part because, in both books, the very act of turning the pages plays a pivotal role in telling the story. Each turn reveals something new in a way that builds on the image on the previous page. Now that I’m an illustrator myself, I’ve often thought about this dramatic storytelling device and all of its creative possibilities.

My new book, The Invention of Hugo Cabret, is a 550 page novel in words and pictures. But unlike most novels, the images in my new book don’t just illustrate the story; they help tell it. I’ve used the lessons I learned from Remy Charlip and other masters of the picture book to create something that is not a exactly a novel, not quite a picture book, not really a graphic novel, or a flip book or a movie, but a combination of all these things.

I began thinking about this book ten years ago after seeing some of the magical films of Georges M?li?s, the father of science-fiction movies. But it wasn’t until I read a book called Edison’s Eve: The Quest for Mechanical Life by Gaby Woods that my story began to come into focus. I discovered that M?li?s had a collection of mechanical, wind-up figures (called automata) that were donated to a museum, but which were later destroyed and thrown away. Instantly, I imagined a boy discovering these broken, rusty machines in the garbage, stealing one and attempting to fix it. At that moment, Hugo Cabret was born.

A few years ago, I had the honor of meeting Remy Charlip, and I’m proud to say that we’ve become friends. Last December he was asking me what I was working on, and as I was describing this book to him, I realized that Remy looks exactly like Georges M?li?s. I excitedly asked him to pose as the character in my book, and fortunately, he said yes. So every time you see M?li?s in The Invention of Hugo Cabret, the person you are really looking at is my dear friend Remy Charlip, who continues to inspire everyone who has the great pleasure of knowing him or seeing his work.

Paris in the 1930’s, a thief, a broken machine, a strange girl, a mean old man, and the secrets that tie them all together… Welcome to The Invention of Hugo Cabret.

    Yours,

    Brian Selznick

Brian Selznick on a “Deleted Scene” from The Invention of Hugo Cabret

This is a finished drawing that I had to cut from The Invention of Hugo Cabret. I was still rewriting the book when I had to begin the final art. There was originally a scene in the story where this character, Etienne, is working in a camera shop. On one of my research trips to Paris I spent an entire day visiting old camera shops and photographing cameras from the 1930’s and earlier, as well as the facades of the shops themselves. I researched original French camera posters and made sure that the counter and the shelves were accurate to the time period. I did all the drawings in the book at 1/4 scale, so they were very small and I often had to use a magnifying glass to help me see what I was drawing. After I finished this drawing I continued to rewrite, and for various reasons I realized that I needed to move this scene from the camera shop to the French Film Academy, which meant that I had to cut this picture. I tried really hard to find ANOTHER moment when I could have Etienne in a camera shop, but, as painful as it was, I knew the picture had to go. I’m glad to see it up on the Amazon website because otherwise no one would have ever seen all those tiny cameras I researched and drew so carefully!

The Boy of a Thousand Faces

    Customer Review: Bravo!
There was a frequent segue phrase used on Monty Python’s Flying Circus: “And now, for something completely different . . .,” and I feel like that this book fits that perfectly.

On one level, this is basically a mystery story about a twelve-year-old orphan boy, Hugo Cabret, who lives in a Paris train station in about 1930. As the story progresses, we discover, gradually, the secrets that led to him living alone and secretively in the train station, where he keeps all the clocks working well and on time. We also discover the secrets behind the lives of the old man who runs the toy shop in the station, Papa Georges, and of his goddaughter, Isabelle, and to a lesser extent, Hugo’s new friend, the one-eyed man named Etienne. Their secrets are interwoven, and the connecting and discovery of those secrets will have an impact on Parisian culture. What does the story have to do with magic, illusion, clock-making, complex mechanics, and the early history of film-making? Everything!

The story itself is done well, with interesting characters, a breath-taking pace, and a good degree of plot complexity, especially with how the secrets are gradually uncovered, and have fascinating interconnections and ramifications that stretch well beyond the characters. However, that is not what makes this book stand out.

What does move this book into the category of “And now, for something completely different?” The format! By topical genre, this book is a mystery, aimed at ages six to ninety-six, but the format, or presentation, is something I have never seen before. I have read books where illustrations are an important adjunct to the text. A good example is How to Keep Dinosaurs by Robert Mash. I have read good graphic novels, with The Hedge Knight - Second Edition [Graphic Novel] by George R.R. Martin being a prime example. The Asterix and Obelix books are good examples of comic books with enough mature connotations and subtexts that they appeal to some adults. I have not yet read, or viewed, The Arrival by Shaun Tan, which is a virtually textless tales of the struggles of an immigrant adjusting to a new culture, but The Invention of Hugo Cabret is not that, either, as text is an integral part of the story.

The Invention of Hugo Cabret is something else, yet again. Of its 525 pages, roughly 300 pages are beautiful illustrations, mainly complex, detailed pencil drawings by the author, Brian Selznick. Mr. Selznick was an illustrator before he became an author, and his skill and love for the visual medium sings loudly and clearly in this work of art. A typical sequence features a series of sequential drawings, perhaps covering seven or eight pages, presenting a key piece of the story, followed by an interlude of two to four pages of text, that often features dialogue and background history, presented by one or more of the characters, as they pry at, and unearth, and unravel each other’s interrelated secrets. Even the paper speaks of the author’s love of art, as it is all wood-free, woven paper, that is heavy and semi-glossy in texture. I would love to stroll throw a museum with this story, presented large, displayed upon the walls, probably underground, with dark and light areas, illumination-wise, and the hallways twisting and turning. If it were presented that way, many visitors would end up running through, as they get entranced by, and caught up in, this well-told story of tragedy, buried history, and triumph. They would want to devour it as fast as possible, and then run right back through.

    – Chris McCallister, author of Coming Full Circle

    Customer Review: Beautiful Pictures
I loved this book. The pictures were beautiful and the text was also good. I liked the way this book was mainly in picture format with some text here and there - to me it was a refreshing way to read a book.

There are also many different ways to interpret the pictures. If you take out all the text, the pictures could become a totally different story. I showed this book to one of my friends and he interpreted the story in a completely new and hilarious way.

Presto MyPod Refillable Coffee Holder - The Philips Senseo coffee maker uses disposable pods to make a delicious cup of coffee. But those pods can get expensive, and they don’t have every flavor and type of coffee imaginable. That’s where the Presto MyPod can help! It replaces your Senseo’s pod holder, allowing you to use your own ground coffee. Simply pour the coffee into the MyPod, put on the compacting cover, and insert it into the Senseo!

Customer Review: This works, but not as well as the coffee duck
I purchased my presto refillable pod/coffee holder at Wal-Mart. It does work, but there are two things that you must know about this.

This will make a large cup of coffee when you push the single cup button on your Senseo.

This will not froth the coffee the way other products such as the ‘Coffee Duck’ and ‘Ecopad’ do.

This will do the job, but I recommend the other products that I just mentioned.

    Customer Review: MyPod it is
Need to experiment to get it right, sometimes cups overflow, but all in all a good product and it does cut the cost of coffee pods. Be sure to order extra filters!

Really pretty pictures, nice recommendations of possible plants to grow up the trellises, etc., but unless your a master carpenter, or able to use pictures, you’ll never build any of them!! There’s no diagrams or plans in the entire book!!
Customer Review: Excellent photos and ideas!
I really enjoyed this book, being my first Sunset guide to gardening. With all of the excellent photos and drawings it gives you plenty of ideas for building outdoor structures. Granted, it is a short book and you won’t be an expert after reading it, but it gives you plenty of information to get started with building beautiful garden trellises and arbors.

Futurama: The Beast with a Billion Backs
    Studio description:
In Futurama’s latest and most tentacle-packed epic, space itself rips open, revealing a gateway to another universe. But what lies beyond? Horror? Love? Or maybe both, if it happens to contain a repulsive, planet-sized monster with romantic intentions! Nothing less than the fate of human and robot-kind is at stake as the Futurama crew takes on The Beast with a Billion Backs.

The Beast with a Billion Backs will be presented in widescreen format with English Dolby Surround 5.1, along with French and Spanish subtitles. Bonus features include:

The second of four direct-to-DVD adventures featuring the Futurama crew, The Beast with a Billion Backs picks up where its predecessor, Bender’s Big Score, left off while balancing multiple love stories and the arrival of a sexually voracious alien from another universe. Unlike Bender, the various story lines converge well here–the tentacled, Lovecraftian creature Yivo (voiced by David Cross), which wants to mate with the entire population of the universe at once, makes Fry (Billy West) its de facto leader (Pope, actually), which in turn plays havoc with his relationship with new girlfriend Colleen (Brittany Murphy). And Yivo’s scheme causes the people of Earth to evacuate the planet, leaving it in the hands of robots–which is, of course, excellent news for Futurama’s resident mechanical malcontent, Bender (John DiMaggio). Beast is probably best understood and enjoyed by longtime fans of the series, who will recognize and appreciate the countless “surprise guests” (Robot Satan, the Harlem Globetrotters, Bender’s hero Calculon, the head of Stephen Hawking), though the feature is certainly well-written and performed by its voice cast, and should provide plenty laughs for first-timers with flexible attention spans. Parents, however, should note that the humor can be fairly suggestive at times, and should exercise caution in regard to younger viewers.

Extras include a very funny commentary track with creators Matt Groening and David X Cohen, stars West, DiMaggio and Maurice LaMarche, and key members of the production team. Deleted scenes and a making-of featurette with the voice cast are entertaining, but the real features of value are Futurama: The Lost Adventure, which is culled from the Futurama game for Playstation 2, as well as a lengthy preview of the next direct-to-DVD movie, Bender’s Game. Suffice it to say that the Lord of the Rings weighs heavily on the storyline. — Paul Gaita

Customer Review: Decently done, but missing the old magic
Like another reviewer defined themselves, I’m not one of those people who thinks that the old stuff is better & the new stuff is bad. The first movie (Bender’s Big Score) was cute & enjoyable. This film is as well, but there’s just something missing from it.

The premise is that Bender’s constant jumping back & forth in time caused a rift in space, which is home to a rather strange alien being. Other plot points involve Fry’s disasterous attempt at dating as well as Amy’s “marraige” to Kif. BwaBB is cute, but it just doesn’t seem to really live up to it’s predecessor, Bender’s Big Score. I’ll give it 4 stars for the nostalgia & the entertainment value I got from watching it, but this just wasn’t as fun as I’d hoped it would be. Still, there’s one more movie to go… here’s hoping that it makes up for this one.

Customer Review: Fan of the show, not of the packaging.
While I didn’t care for this installment as much as I liked “Bender’s Big Score,” I still enjoyed having more adventures with the Planet Express crew.

It’s a shame that the packaging will utterly destroy my DVD before it gets watched two or three more times. In all, the movie has been viewed twice, and in removing it from and returning it to the cardboard sleeve it comes in, it is already significantly scratched.

If you’re buying this DVD, be sure you have a standard plastic case to put it in, or you’re throwing your twenty bucks away.
